B12 has become popular as a remedy for fatigue. But treating it only makes sense when it is actually low, and that is known from a blood test, not from how you feel.
What B12 does
It plays a part in forming red blood cells, in nervous system function and in DNA synthesis. According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, deficiency can cause anemia, fatigue, tingling in hands and feet, balance problems and memory difficulties.
Who is at higher risk of running low
- People over 50, because absorption declines with age
- Those on a strict vegetarian or vegan diet
- Those on long-term metformin
- Those taking daily reflux medication
- People who have had stomach or bowel surgery
- Those with conditions affecting absorption
Fatigue is not the same as low B12
This is the part worth being clear about. Fatigue has many causes: iron-deficiency anemia, thyroid problems, sleep apnea, depression, poorly controlled diabetes, simply not sleeping enough. B12 is only one of them, and not the most common.
Taking B12 without measuring it can make you feel better through expectation alone, while the real cause goes untreated. That is why the right order is: measure first, treat afterwards.
How it is measured
With a blood test that requires no fasting. If the value is borderline, additional tests are sometimes ordered to confirm. Mention if you are already receiving B12 injections: they change the result and that matters when interpreting it.
Injection or tablet
When deficiency is confirmed, both routes work in most cases. Injections are used mainly when the problem is absorption, which is when tablets do not help. The schedule and duration depend on the cause: a meat-free diet is not the same as stomach surgery.
What to expect from treatment
Blood values improve within weeks. Neurological symptoms, where present, take longer and do not always fully recover, especially if the deficiency lasted a long time. That is another reason to measure before they appear.
In Houston
At Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud Little York the test is done at the clinic, walk-in, and the medical team explains the result. Promotions include the general blood panel with vitamin B12 for $99. If fatigue comes with weight changes or hair loss, it is worth checking the thyroid too.
