Why test without symptoms?
Because most of these infections stay silent for months. Untreated chlamydia and gonorrhea can affect fertility; syphilis progresses in stages and can go unnoticed for years. Testing is the only way to know.
The window period
A test done too early can come back negative even when there is an infection. Each infection has its own detection window, so if the risk exposure was recent, say so at the visit: that determines when testing makes sense and whether it should be repeated later.
When is a check-up worthwhile?
- A new partner or several partners
- Sex without a condom with someone whose status you do not know
- Symptoms: unusual discharge, burning when urinating, sores, warts, itching
- If your partner received a diagnosis
- During pregnancy, as part of prenatal care
What if it is positive?
The result is explained, treatment is set out and, where appropriate, how to notify partners so they can be treated too. Many of these infections are fully cured with antibiotics, and those that are not can be controlled.
No hormonal birth control method protects against these infections: condoms do. A birth control visit can review the combination that suits you.
