An electrocardiogram (EKG) records the heart's electrical activity. It is done at the clinic, takes a few minutes, does not hurt and needs no special preparation.
When is it done?
- Palpitations or a feeling that the heart skips a beat
- Chest pain or pressure
- Dizziness or fainting
- Shortness of breath on exertion
- As part of a check-up when there is high blood pressure, diabetes or high cholesterol
- Before minor surgery or starting certain treatments
What is the test like?
Adhesive electrodes are placed on the chest, arms and legs, connected to the machine. You lie still for a few seconds while it records. No current is delivered: the machine only listens. The whole procedure takes about 10 minutes.
- Wear clothing that opens easily at the front
- Avoid cream or lotion on the chest that day: the electrodes come loose
- With a lot of chest hair, small areas may need shaving
What does it show, and what does it not?
The EKG shows rhythm, rate and signs of conduction problems or previous damage. It is a snapshot: if symptoms come and go, a normal EKG does not rule them out, and a longer recording or a stress test may be needed. In that case you are told and given the tracing to take to a specialist.
When not to wait
Chest pain that does not ease, spreads to the arm or jaw, with cold sweat, nausea or shortness of breath: call 911. Do not drive yourself and do not wait for an appointment.
Walk-in and no insurance
Monday through Sunday, 9 AM to 9 PM. If the EKG is part of blood pressure or diabetes monitoring, follow-up continues under chronic conditions.
