A sore throat is almost always viral, but when strep causes it, an antibiotic is needed. The rapid test is done at the clinic with a throat swab and the result is read in the same visit.
When is it worth doing?
- Severe, sudden-onset sore throat
- Fever
- Swollen, tender neck glands
- White patches on the tonsils
- No cough: the less cold-like it is, the more likely strep becomes
If there is a cough, heavy mucus, hoarseness or pink eye, a virus is far more likely, and antibiotics do not help.
What is the test like?
A swab is passed across the back of the throat. It is uncomfortable for a few seconds and can trigger a gag, but it does not hurt. If the rapid test is negative and suspicion is high, a culture can be sent to the lab to confirm.
Why does treating it matter?
Untreated strep can lead to abscesses, and in some cases to rheumatic fever, which affects the heart. That is why this particular illness does justify antibiotics, while most sore throats do not.
When to go to the emergency room
Difficulty swallowing saliva, difficulty breathing, inability to open the mouth, a muffled voice or significant neck swelling.
Walk-in and no insurance
Monday through Sunday, 9 AM to 9 PM. If there is also fever and general malaise, flu and COVID testing can be done in the same visit.
