Thyroid Testing & Treatment

Thyroid testing and treatment in Houston, TX. Lab tests and follow-up in Spanish, with affordable pricing.

The thyroid regulates metabolism, and when it fails the symptoms get mistaken for other things: fatigue, weight changes, hair loss or feeling cold all the time. It is studied with a blood test done at the clinic, walk-in.

Which symptoms raise suspicion?

Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism): fatigue that rest does not fix, weight gain without diet changes, dry skin, hair loss, constipation, feeling cold, heavier periods.

Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism): weight loss while eating the same, palpitations, hand tremor, anxiety, insomnia, sweating, lighter periods.

None of these symptoms belongs to the thyroid alone. That is why it is confirmed with lab work before treating.

What does a thyroid panel measure?

  • TSH: the hormone that gives the order. It is the first to shift and the most sensitive
  • Free T4: the hormone the gland produces
  • T3: added when an overactive thyroid is suspected
  • Antibodies: when an autoimmune cause is being looked for

No fasting is needed for a thyroid panel. If you already take levothyroxine, take it after the blood draw that day.

Is testing worthwhile without symptoms?

The USPSTF concludes there is not enough evidence to recommend thyroid screening in adults without symptoms. With symptoms, a family history, a lump in the neck or during pregnancy, the situation changes and testing is warranted.

What does follow-up look like?

If the result is abnormal, treatment starts and the test is repeated in 6 to 8 weeks to adjust the dose. Once stable, checks are usually every 6 to 12 months. The dose is not changed by how you feel, but by what the lab says.

Walk-in and no insurance
