What are the symptoms?

How is it diagnosed?
With a urine sample analyzed at the clinic: it looks for blood, nitrites, leukocytes and protein. If the problem recurs or does not respond to treatment, a culture is sent to the lab to identify the bacteria and find which antibiotic works.
When is it an emergency?
A bladder infection is uncomfortable, but it resolves. What cannot wait is an infection that reaches the kidney. Go to the emergency room if you have:
- Fever with chills
- Pain in the flank or lower back

How to prepare for the urine test
- If you can, do not urinate in the hour before your visit
- The sample is collected mid-stream, after cleaning the area
- Say if you are taking an antibiotic: it changes the result
- If you are on your period, mention it, because blood can confuse the reading
