A stool test looks for infections, parasites and hidden blood. It is ordered at the visit and the sample is collected at home following simple instructions.
When is it ordered?
- Diarrhea lasting more than a few days
- Diarrhea after travel or after suspect food or water
- Persistent abdominal pain with changes in bowel habits
- Visible blood in the stool, or very dark stool
- Unexplained weight loss
- Parasites as part of a check-up, especially in children
What is analyzed?
- Ova and parasites: eggs and parasites
- Stool culture: bacteria that cause diarrhea
- Occult blood: bleeding not visible to the eye
- General exam: fat, mucus, undigested remains
How is the sample collected?
- Use the sterile container you are given, not a household jar
- The sample must not mix with urine or toilet water
- A portion the size of a walnut is enough, or a few milliliters if liquid
- Bring it to the clinic as soon as possible; if it takes longer, keep it refrigerated
- If several samples were requested, collect them on different days: parasites are not shed every day
Mention if you are taking antibiotics, antacids or antidiarrheals: they change the result.
When not to wait for the result
Diarrhea with heavy bleeding, high fever, vomiting that prevents drinking, or signs of dehydration such as a dry mouth, passing very little urine or dizziness on standing. That calls for immediate care, and sometimes fluid replacement with an IV drip.
