An ingrown toenail happens when the edge of the nail digs into the skin. It hurts, it gets infected easily and it rarely sorts itself out. It is treated at the clinic under local anesthesia, walk-in.
How does it start?
- Pain at the edge of the toe, almost always the big toe
- Redness and swelling around the nail
- Discomfort when putting on a shoe or walking
- If it gets infected: pus, warmth and throbbing pain
Why does it happen?
Cutting the nail too short or rounding the corners, narrow or pointed shoes, repeated impact from running, heavy sweating, or simply a nail shape that tends to curve.
How is it treated?
The toe is numbed and the section of nail digging in is removed. The procedure takes a few minutes and the relief is immediate. When the problem keeps recurring on the same toe, the nail matrix for that section can be treated so it does not grow inward again.
Aftercare
- Keep the foot clean and dry
- Wear roomy shoes for a few days, with no pressure on the toe
- Warm water soaks if instructed
- Come back if pus, spreading redness or fever appear
How to stop it coming back
Cut the nail straight across, without rounding the corners, and do not leave it too short. Wear shoes with enough room for your toes. If you play sports, check that the shoe is not tight in length.
If you have diabetes or poor circulation, do not treat the toe at home. Any foot wound needs assessment: it is reviewed under wound care.
