Vitamin IV Therapy

Vitamin IV drips are intravenous hydration with vitamins and minerals, given by medical staff at the clinic. They are used mainly when replacing fluids by mouth is difficult.

What does it involve?

A line is placed in the arm and the fluid runs slowly while you sit. The session lasts 30 to 60 minutes. Before starting, blood pressure, pulse and the reason for the visit are checked, because not every problem is solved with hydration.

When is it used?

• Dehydration after vomiting or diarrhea
• Difficulty drinking fluids after an infection
• Fatigue linked to a deficiency confirmed in blood work
• Fluid replacement in extreme heat or after heavy exertion

What a vitamin drip does not do

It is worth saying plainly: it does not replace treatment for an illness and it does not cure an infection. With a high fever, severe pain, difficulty breathing or severe dehydration, what is needed is a medical assessment, and sometimes the emergency room. The drip supports a diagnosis, it does not replace one.

You do not need a deficiency in order to rehydrate, but if fatigue is the main symptom, finding the cause with blood work makes more sense than repeating drips.

Is it safe?

It is given by medical staff and monitored during the session. The most common effects are discomfort at the puncture site and a small bruise. Say beforehand if you have heart or kidney disease, if you are pregnant, or if you have reacted to a vitamin or medication before: in those cases the plan changes.

How to prepare

• Eat something beforehand, even if it is light
• Bring your medication and supplement list
• Wear sleeves that roll up easily
• If your veins are hard to find, drink water before coming
