Abscess Drainage

An abscess is a collection of pus under the skin. Antibiotics alone do not resolve it: it has to be drained. This is done at the clinic, under local anesthesia and walk-in.

How is it recognized?

• A red, warm lump that is painful to touch
• It feels soft or fluid-filled when pressed
• It grows over a few days
• Sometimes a yellowish point appears in the center
• There may be fever if the infection advances

Why are antibiotics not enough?

Antibiotics do not penetrate the pus capsule well. Until the abscess is opened and emptied, the pain continues and the infection can spread. Drainage is the treatment; antibiotics, when needed, are the complement.

What is drainage like?

The area is numbed, a small incision is made and the contents are emptied. Sometimes gauze or a drain is left in place for a few days so it keeps draining. Pain relief is usually immediate, which is why many patients regret having waited.

Aftercare

• Change the dressing as instructed
• Keep the area clean and dry
• Warm water soaks help when the abscess is somewhere that allows it
• Come back for review on the days indicated
• Do not squeeze it or try to empty it at home: that spreads the infection

Do not try it yourself

Bursting an abscess at home pushes the infection inward and can leave a scar. Seek care immediately if the lump is on the face near the eyes or nose, if you have a high fever, if redness is spreading quickly, or if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system.
