Diabetes Management Houston: Guide for Hispanic Patients
Learn how to manage your diabetes with our comprehensive guide. Glucose monitoring, diet, medications, and how Clínica Hispana Nueva Salud Little York can help Houston patients.
Diabetes is not cured, it is managed. And managing it well means specific numbers, checks on specific dates, and knowing what to do when something goes out of range.
The numbers that matter
A1C. It is the average blood sugar over the last three months. According to the American Diabetes Association, below 5.7% is normal, 5.7 to 6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or above is diabetes. For most adults with diabetes, the target is keeping it under 7%, though it is individualized in older adults or those with other conditions.
Fasting glucose. Between 80 and 130 mg/dL is usually the target range for most adults.
Blood pressure. Damage from diabetes and from high blood pressure add up. Controlling one without the other leaves the job half done.
Cholesterol. It is watched alongside the rest, because diabetes multiplies cardiovascular risk.
How often to get checked
- A1C: every 3 months if not at target; every 6 when stable
- Blood pressure: at every visit
- Eyes: yearly ophthalmologist exam, even if your sight is fine
- Feet: checked at every visit, and by you every day
- Kidneys: yearly urine and kidney function testing
The feet
They deserve their own section. Neuropathy means wounds hurt little, so they are found late, and reduced circulation means they close poorly. Check your feet every day, including the soles and between the toes. Any wound, blister or reddened area gets looked at, even if it seems small: that is followed under wound care.
Signs something is wrong
Very high blood sugar: intense thirst, urinating a lot, blurred vision, extreme fatigue.
Very low blood sugar: shaking, cold sweat, confusion, sudden hunger, palpitations. It is corrected quickly with fast-acting sugar.
Emergency: difficulty breathing, vomiting that prevents drinking, confusion or drowsiness. That is 911.
What changes the outcome most
It is not the medication: it is consistency. Taking it at the same time every day, measuring when due, not skipping check-ups even when you feel fine, and bringing your readings log to each visit. Well-controlled diabetes causes no symptoms, which is exactly why many people stop when things are going well.
